Happy Thursday Friends!
It’s been a fabulous, busy week! I’ve had a lot of newcomers here and it’s been loads of fun chatting and getting to know y’all. Some Random Guy™️ and I have been brainstorming ways to be more organized in my approach here (his forte, for sure!) and decided to embrace the classic TBT post. Be prepared to know more about my very varied life moving forward, haha!
Mukashi, mukashi…
Here’s a silly photo of me (yes it’s me. I sometimes don’t even recognize old photos of me too!) showing off my pears from August of 2011, about a week after I moved to Hiroshima, Japan because of my former husband’s work. I was 26 years old, had a medically needy 3 year old, and a 4 month old baby…which admittedly was a bold move. Even at the time I knew that moving with two youngg kids to a foreign country where I could only speak a handful of words was next level brave/crazy, but, for better or for worse, I’ve never been one to back down from a challenge.
Thankfully, this turned out to be a wonderful chapter in my life and helped me become the confident, self-assured person that you see today. One part of that was because Japanese culture, as a whole, is very supportive of mothers in a way that I had never experienced. Before moving to Japan, it often seemed that I needed to defend why I chose to be a stay-at-home mom instead of “working”. In Japan, motherhood is viewed as a career and staying home to raise your kids is considered one of the most difficult, yet important, jobs a person can have. I was told earnestly by many people, “mothers are the strongest members of our society”, which (sadly) blew my mind at the time. No one had ever come at me with this kind of energy and it helped me better understand and embrace my innate power and strength as a woman, and a mother.
Meanwhile…when it comes to the role of a father, paternity leave, and honouring stay-at-home dads, Japan unfortunately seems to be decades behind us. But that is a conversation for another day ;)
A bunch of you have already shared with me many personal details about your lives. I’d love to hear more from any of you, if you want to share here, or in private messages. Thank you again for all your support.
With Love,
The Sex Witch aka Willow. 😘
